Wales at the European Championships

The 2010 European Championships were held in Ostend, finishing on July 3rd. Wales were represented in all three events: Open, Ladies and Seniors.

The Open Team was Patrick Shields & Paul Denning, Gary & Dafydd Jones and Adrian Thomas & Peter Goodman, with NPC Mike Pownall.

The Ladies Team was Sheila Shea & Beth Wennell, Daphne Patrick & Judith Belcher and Laura Woodruff & Gilly Clench, with NPC Mike Close.

The Seniors Team was John Salisbury & Mike Tedd, Peter & Jean Hand and Paul Gagne & Diana Harris, with NPC Alan Screen.

There was disappointment for the Welsh Open team when they finished 9th equal to Hungary and Latvia in their half of the field with 9 to qualify for the final, but were eliminated on a split tie as Latvia went through. Very sad, but the team deserve all our congratulations for doing so well - they were in a qualifying place throughout, until the last match.

Meanwhile the Welsh Ladies and Seniors teams played full round-robins without any cut-off points. The Ladies started badly but managed to improve and thus avoid their wooden spoon, just. The Seniors were also rather out of their depth and similarly finished bottom but one.
