Max Powell

Max died peacefully at The Princess of Wales Hospital Bridgend on Saturday 6 Oct 07.

Among his tremendous contributions to the Welsh bridge scene, Max was President of the WBU in 1976-7 and again in 1988-9.

Max had 13 caps for Wales in the Camrose in the period 1966 to 1980, the first two partnering Sid Gibbins and the remainder with Colin Heard. (Of these 4 were wins.) He was non-playing captain eight times from 1962 to 1990, including a memorable trouncing of England in 1977.

He succeeded Geoffrey Howell as the organiser of the National Congress at Porthcawl, and was the heart and soul of that flagship event for many years.

Max served on Council and on the Laws & Ethics committee for many years; he chaired the L &E committee for much of that time and was untiring in his pursuit of ethical conduct in Bridge in Wales. He was honoured as one of our very few Honorary Life Members.

Max worked hard to promote bridge in Wales, and taught in his area. Max and Mari worked as hosts on Bridge holidays and were well liked by all who met them.

Without the sterling work done for Bridge by Max and people like him, the game of bridge would fail to function and prosper.

He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends and the Bridge playing community especially Bridgend Bridge Club.
